Canberra’s landmark Embassy Motel will bite the dust on Monday 6 July with the building’s final iconic tower due to be demolished at 10.00am.
The demolition process, which has been underway for the past two weeks, will then draw to a close with the site reduced to rubble ready for clean-up, remediation and preparation for building works to commence on the new luxury apartment building, The Ambassador.
Three excavators capable of handling 45 tonnes, 33 tonnes and 23 tonnes respectively, will take less than a day to take apart more than 50 years of local history. Rubble will then be sorted into masonry, concrete, timber and metal for recycling and disposal.
Canberra Investment Corporation Limited (CIC) is the company behind The Ambassador’s development, which has been designed by renowned firm Colin Stewart Architects.
CIC CEO Col Alexander says Monday’s milestone will make history for a few reasons.
"While the demolition marks the end of an era," he says, "The Ambassador will create a new chapter in this site’s history by uniting its unique and prestigious location with a modern, elegant urban design for a new generation of residents."
